Sprains to ligament are very common and X-rays are not always done for this type of injury.
The injured area will be bruised and swollen and might stay painful and uncomfortable for another two months, but this won’t be as bad as it is now.
You should:
- Take painkillers such as ibuprofen or paracetamol (both available from a chemist) to relieve the pain. Ask a doctor first if you are on any medication.
- Use ice-packs (frozen peas in a damp towel will do) to help reduce bruising and swelling, for 10 minutes 4-6 times a day.
- Elevate your injured limb whenever possible
- Use supportive bandages only if advised.
- Gently exercise your injured area to stop it becoming stiff.
- Go to a doctor if the pain does not get any better and we have not arranged to see you again.
